International Day of Rural Women

International Day of Rural Women is on celebrated every year on October 15th. This day is dedicated to the millions of women living in remote, rural places and celebrates the achievements and contributions of these women towards rural development and agriculture. This day started to be celebrated in Rwanda in 1997. In addition to that it highlights the role of rural women and girls in the food systems of the world.

From production of crops to processing, preparing and distributing foods, women’s labour – paid and unpaid – feeds their families, communities and the world. Yet, they do not wield equal power with men, and as a result, they earn less income and experience higher food insecurity.

Celebrating this day, it is an opportunity to boost efforts of supporting rural women to benefit equally from their productivity and processes. The Day recognizes “the critical role and contribution of rural women in enhancing agricultural and rural development, improving food security and eradicating rural poverty.”
